Tarpon are the large majestic fish of the Megalops genus and believed to be one of the first salt water species to be acknowledged as a game fish. While tarpon can be found on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, fishing tarpon in the western Atlantic is most popular in the warmer coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, and the West Indies. Anglers can even find tarpon fishing in some freshwater lakes and rivers and can fish tarpon year round. The infamous Florida tarpon tournaments occur during the months of May and June. This is when many climb aboard the tarpon fishing charters in Boca Grande for the thrill of reeling in a bright silver 150lb tarpon as it shoots six to ten feet out the water. The adrenaline fueled thrill of tarpon fishing is arguably unrivaled in the sport fishing world.
